Characteristics of gifted and talented children can result in incorrect diagnoses, such as ADD/ADHD, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, or Bipolar Disorder. Some gifted children do suffer disorders—such as in Learning Disabilities, Allergies, or Depression—but giftedness is often an overlooked factor. Few psychologists, pediatricians, or other health care professionals have received any training about the characteristics or common difficulties of gifted children or adults, though these professionals have much to offer such families. This Webinar describes how to differentiate whether a child or adult suffers from these disorders, or whether the child or adult is simply showing gifted behaviors. The session also discusses dual diagnoses, with an emphasis on disorders that occur more frequently among gifted populations. The session will close with ideas for the emotional/behavioral management of gifted children from a neuropsychological perspective.

Gifted children behaviors do not respond to certain forms of behavior management. Learn approaches that are neuropsychology based to assist parents and teachers so a child's rational thinking can take over emotions. Structure, consistency, and routine will be discussed, along with the Priming, Previewing, Pre-empting, Disengagement, and Re-engagement method.
Gifted children display behaviors originating from intensity that do not respond to traditional forms of behavior management. Participants will learn behavioral and emotional management approaches that are neuropsychology based. These effective interventions assist parents and teachers to facilitate children with the recovery of their emotional feelings, so their rational thinking can take over. Practical explanations for imposing structure, consistency, and routine will be discussed, along with the Priming, Previewing, Pre-empting, Disengagement, and Re-engagement method. Dr. Paul Beljan is the past president of the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology. He holds child and adult diplomate qualifications with the American Board of Pediatric Neuropsychology and the American Board of Professional Neuropsychology. Dr. Beljan completed two Post-Doctoral Fellowship programs in Pediatric Psychology and Pediatric Neuropsychology, and has completed coursework for his post doctoral master’s degree in psychopharmachology. Dr. Beljan’s professional focus is on Alcohol/Drug Related Neurodevelopmental Deficit (A/DRND), Gifted Intelligence, Learning Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, Trauma, and Attention and Executive Functioning Deficit diagnosis and interventions. In addition to his pediatric neuropsychology practice, Dr. Beljan is a consultant for The Davidson Institute for Talent Development and a board member of the Arizona Voice for Crime Victims and the Southwest Institute
